About Our Pastor



Pastor Johnny R. Stone, the tenth pastor of Hill Street Baptist Church and Rev. Nina C. Stone celebrates fourteen years of Service.

Pastor Stone is the son of the late Mrs. Willie B. and Oliver Stone and is the middle child of two brothers and two sisters. He was born in Forth Worth, Texas where he was raised and educated. He is married to Rev. Nina C. Stone who is a native of Lynchburg, Virginia and they share in the love of a son, Derick M. Culpepper also of Lynchburg.

Pastor Stone's educational achievements include:

  • R. Paschal High School and Tarrant County Junior College of Fort Worth, Texas
  • Dallas Theological Seminary & Lay Institute - Dallas, Texas
  • Arlington Baptist College - Arlington, Texas
  • Bachelor of Religious Education - Virginia Seminary and College, Lynchburg, VA
  • Doctorate of Humane Letters - Bethlehem Bible College, Roanoke, VA

While living in Forth Worth, Pastor Stone was a member of the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church where he accepted Jesus christ as his Lord and Savior. He accepted God's call to the ministry in 1982, was licensed to preach on August 22, 1982 and was ordained as a minister of the Gospel on January 11, 1987. After graduating from Virginia Seminary, Pastor Stone was called to pastor Millstone Baptist Church, Nathalie, Virginia where he served for four years before receiving the call to pastor Hill Street Baptist Church.

Pastor Stone is also a community leader and believes in working together toward one common goal. His community involvement includes:

  • Member of the Baptist Ministers Conference - Roanoke, Salem and Vicinity
  • Member of the Board of Directors of One Church One Child
  • Member of the Board of Directors Roanoke Neighborhood Development Corporation
  • Member of the Steering Committee for Lincoln 2000
  • Founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors Hill Street Community Development Corporation
  • Moderator of the Valley Baptist Association

Pastor Stone gives all glory to God for his many accomplishments as a husband, pastor, teacher and community leader. His first true love is preaching the gospel for Jesus Christ. Through teaching the Word of God, Pastor Stone hopes to instill in God's people a belief in family, total liberation of the whole person, self-help, self-pride, and self-respect. His motto for life is "Have the confidence to speak your mind and the courage to stand behind what you say."
